Jane Wambui Kariuki, a mother of two, has been living with diabetes for 20 years now, a condition that contributed to her kidney failure in mid-2018.
Kariuki, 46, hails from Mangu, Gatundu North in Kiambu County.
In an exclusive interview, her son, Mr Solomon Kariuki, revealed that his mother was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) in 2018.
"My mother was diagnosed with ESRD commonly referred to as kidney failure in mid-2018. This means that her kidneys are no longer able to work as they should to meet her body's needs. Her 20-year long battle fighting diabetes has not been easy. All through, her sheer will, love for her family and unrivalled desire to conquer have kept her going," said Solomon.
According to Solomon, the most viable option to save his mother is a kidney transplant, which is a treatment of choice for end-stage renal disease.
He noted that her doctors at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) recommended the transplant as opposed to a lifetime on dialysis.
"She has been undergoing bi-weekly dialysis sessions at Kenyatta Hospital. She has to be at KNH by 5 am every Monday and Thursday commuting from Mangu to KNH," he added.
Solomon says he has been identified as a compatible donor, but the family is unable to raise the Sh 2.5 million needed to cater for the transplant and supportive care.
Kariuki and her son are now appealing to friends and well-wishers to help them raise the money.
