The animals are said to have died over the weekend after heavy rains that began hitting the region from Thursday 28 March 2019.

While confirming these reports, Hurri location chief, Mr Bonaya Racha, said they are suspecting the animals succumbed to Pneumonia after drinking water from the heavy rains that rained through Saturday.

"The goats had painful coughs, difficulty in breathing and loss of appetite. They died after drinking water after short rains experienced in this area on Thursday through Saturday. We suspect they might have succumbed to pneumonia,” said the Administrator.

Reports from residents who spoke to this writer show that one family suffered the most after 324 goats died from their herd.

"It is a very sad incidence to us all, there is a family that lost over 324 animals, another 130 and many more in Shankewa area that are yet to tell us including me who lost 6 of them," said Michael Sabita, a resident.

Speaking on the incidence, Marsabit County Livestock director Dr Boku Bodha said investigations have been launched to get the cause of the loss which an NGO livestock expert from the County offices attributed to poisoning or hypothermia.

"I am not in a position to give a conclusive report about the incident since I have just been informed about the same. Our teams are already on the ground and will soon undertake an investigation on the cause of death,” Dr Boku.

It is understood that Marsabit is one of the areas that suffer from drought, famine and constant lack of water.
