The government is set to demolish 902 structures to pave way for the construction of the Likoni bridge.

The project consultant Mr Michael Mwangi said most of the buildings to be affected by the project are residential buildings.

Mr Mwangi however said they are yet to establish the number of people who will be displaced by the construction of the Sh80 billion Likoni bridge.

A feasibility study of the project revealed that 770 buildings will be affected on the Likoni side and 132 on the island majority of them being residential in Likoni.

Mr Mwangi who is also the environmental impact assessment team leader said residential houses that will be affected in Likoni area are in Jamvi la Wageni and Mtongwe.

On the island, the government is expected to demolish buildings at Ganjoni where the bridge intersection will be constructed.

“Majority of the buildings to be affected in Likoni are residential while those on the island side will be commercial properties,” said Mr Mwangi as quoted by the Daily Nation.

He however said they are still working on the total number of the affected properties and identifying the population that will be displaced.

“Right now we cannot tell the total number of those who will be affected. We are moving step by step and in two weeks’ time we will be able to tell,” said the managing consultant.

The Mombasa Gate Bridge will link the island to South Coast and is expected to decongest the channel once completed.
