At least 902 buildings will be demolished in Mombasa to pave way for the construction of the Likoni Bridge anticipated to be a mega project in the coastal city.770 of them will be on the main land, South Coast Likoni area, while 132 others on the Island.The bridge that is estimated to cost Sh 80 billion is expected to link Mombasa Island to the South Coast.Likoni channel's capacity is currently filled since it transports about 300,000 people and over 6,000 vehicles in a single day.Michael Mwangi, the project's environmental impact assessment team leader said the buildings which will be brought down included residential and commercial structures."Majority of the buildings to be affected in Likoni are residential while those on the island side will be commercial properties,” Said Mwangi.He said the residential houses to be demolished included those in Jamvi La Wageni and Mtongwe Estates.Mwangi said he could not ascertain exact numbers of residents to be affected by the demolitions, however, the team was working on the data to come up with an asset register.“Right now we cannot tell the total number of those who will be affected, we are moving step by step and in two weeks time we will be able to tell,” Said Mwangi.He said the bridge was expected to start from Lumumba Road near Jela Baridi Bridge in Majengo.
"The project will commence in four years time once the feasibility study is completed."
