Controversial Jubilee deputy chair David Murathe has hinted at seeking court redress to block Deputy President William Ruto's bid to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.
Murathe, has been in tooth and nail straggle to scuttle Ruto’s presidential ambitions claiming that the DP can not vie for presidency since he shall have been in the same office for ten years.
“Nobody can be deputy president for more than two terms. Why does it (the constitution) say that? Because another article also says nobody can be president for more than two terms. And if the President is not there, who becomes the President? His deputy,” said Mr Murathe as quoted by Nation digital.
Referring to the constitution, Murathe said that the law, according to his understanding, has the distinctive roles the deputy president plays as well as the president. The former MP now says he is ready to defend his argument in the Supreme Court as he believes Uhuru and Ruto's tenure is one.
He added that Jubilee as a party had no guarantee and terms that bound president and his deputy on succession process and Ruto is not an automatic candidate for jubilee in 2022.
However, deputy chair affirmed that unity and reconciliation should prevail and no one can intimidate him for supporting it.
“And if it is a crime to support the handshake, we are guilty as charged,” he said while in the burial of Kefa Tuju, a younger brother of Jubilee Party secretary General Raphael Tuju in Rarieda, Siaya County.
