President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday launched the region’s largest solar power plant in Garissa County that is set to lower electricity prices.

During the launch in Mbalambala, Garissa County, President Uhuru took the opportunity to warn elected leaders against wasting public funds.

The President also challenged the public to hold elected leaders to account saying wananchi have the right to question how taxpayers’ money is being used.

Uhuru said that his administration will ensure that every county gets infrastructure projects that will benefit the residents and also create opportunities for investment, employment and wealth.

“We want money allocated for development to go the right projects but not the pockets of a few people. You the people are our employers and you have the right to hold us as leaders to account to make sure your money is used properly,” said Uhuru as quoted by State House.

The 50 MW solar power plant in Garissa which was developed by the Rural Energy Authority (REA) was constructed at a cost Sh13 billion.

President Uhuru said following the launch, Garissa will now be fully connected to the national power grid as the project will ensure residents get access to clean and affordable power as the country moves towards adopting emerging clean energy technology.

He said that there are gaps in terms of development in regions adding that his administration will seek to reduce the gap and serve every Kenyan equally.

“I see that the gap that existed is being reduced. We are developing our country uniformly from Moyale to Namanga from Mombasa to Lake Victoria,” said Uhuru.

Also in attendance was National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi, Garissa Governor Ali Korane, National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale and Mbalambala MP Omar Shurie.
