President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday confirmed that he secretly visited lakeside city of Kisumu on Tuesday, a trip that caught many unaware.
It was Uhuru's forth trip to the city, with the most recent coming in June where he was accompanied by ODM leader Raila Odinga, his former competitor.
A jovial Uhuru was received by port officials and inspection committee led by Kisumu East Deputy County Commissioner Josephine Ouko.
“First, he went straight to board MV Uhuru vessel that has been on a test run. He then toured the port facility and finally retreated to Kisumu Yacht Club,” said a security official who was at the port.
And at Ngong on Wednesday, Uhuru said his trip was meant to inspect the ongoing construction of the Kisumu Port which is almost complete.
The head of state claimed that he had been misled that MV Uhuru was defunct, adding that he was able to see the ship going and coming back from Uganda.
"Our people in Kisumu, they (some people) were saying that its scrap (MV Uhuru), I was there yesterday and I saw with my own eyes, the ship they were saying was scrap is working," Uhuru said.
"It went to Kampala and back. It took some goods and returned it to Kenya. The work wasn't done by foreigners, it was done by our fellow African," he added.
The president did not however name people who had allegedly misled him, leading to abandoning of plans to revamp Kisumu Port earlier on.
ODM leader Raila Odinga played a major role in revamping of the port, which has been out of operation for several years since 1990s.
Uhuru insisted that unity has been key in his legacy agenda, arguing that the handshake with Raila Odinga has given his government conducive environment to work.
