Confirming the incident, area chief Nyang'au Nyariki said the body was discovered by a local herder who had taken his cattle to drink water at Chirichiro river.

"A herder spotted the body floating in the river and raised alarm. The body was retrieved from the river by members of the public who responded to the herder's alarm," said Nyariki.

According to the chief, the body of the deceased is yet to be identified.

"No one recognized the body and we suspect the child was killed elsewhere before he was dumped in the river. Anyone with his or her missing child should report the matter to police officers," he noted.

The administrator said police officers picked the body and took it to Kisii Teaching and Referral hospital morgue.

He assured that a probe to establish the motive behind the killing has commenced.

Mr Nyariki urged parents to be vigilant and take care of their kids to curb unnecessary deaths.

"Police will increase security patrols in the area to keep off criminals from the area," added the chief.
