The outspoken politician called on Ruto not to forsake the Luhya community in the manner in which Raila Odinga did.

"I will stand with you. I will campaign with you so that you can become the president of Kenya but do me one favour, don't do to us what Raila Odinga did to the Luhya community," Khalwale said.

Mr Khalwale tore into Raila Odinga, calling him a duplicitous politician who cannot be trusted.

He fell out with veteran opposition politician in the wake of the hand-shake at Harambee House that helped reduce the political tensions in the country after the disputed 2017 presidential elections.

In 2022 general elections, Khalwale said that he would be a candidate in Kakamega's gubernatorial contest.

His endorsement of William Ruto is a big boost for the country's second-in-command who has struggled to command a following in western Kenya, a region that has voted for Raila Odinga in previous elections.
