At Kakamega on Saturday, Raila accepted the offer during Mashujaa Day weekend, few minutes after the AU confirmed the decision.

"I want to congratulate Raila for his new appointment. This is a confirmation that he's a true Pan-Africanist and his service to the people of Africa is indispensable," said Uhuru.

Mr. Odinga's next station will be in Addis Ababa, with sources confirming that he may as well use partly his Nairobi offices.

And AU commission Chairman Moussa Faki said the decision was endorsed by President Uhuru Kenyatta, whose positively gesture was necessary.

"I want to thank President Uhuru Kenyatta for supporting the decision. I informed him about the lalat development and he supported the idea," he said in a statement.

Raila was privy to his appointment as early as Wednesday when he passed briefly at Addis Ababa on his way from China.

The March 9th handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta also contributed to the decision, with Kenya experiencing relative stability since the two started working together.
