The Kisumu Port has not been launched yet due to diary collisions of the invited Heads of State, the government has said.
Initial details indicated that about four Presidents of the neighbouring nations were to attend the launch of the refurbished port, initially scheduled for August.
However, details have been scanty about the issue since the flopped event, with Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia now saying that plans are ongoing to realize it.
The CS who once again visited the port last week says that the event will be held once all the invited presidents confirm attendance.
"It has been difficult to harmonise the diary of the heads of state. Once it is done, it will be officially opened,” he was quoted by the Nation on Tuesday.
Apart from the port, a number of projects have been ongoing around the Lake Victoria, including renovation of piers, with renovation of houses at the Kisumu port also ongoing.
Consequently, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has deployed 400 people to do the job, which includes clearing the bushes, and later painting the houses in KPA colours.
KPA Managing Director Daniel Manduku said that the job of clearing and renovating piers around the bays surrounding the lake and cleaning of the bays has since began.
“We have already acquired title deeds for the land cleared and are in the process of fencing them,” he said.
