Members of Parliament at the National Assembly have called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and help resolve issues surrounding the alleged importation of mercury sugar.
This is after the MPs dismissed a report by three committees, the Procedure and House Rules Committee, the House Business Committee and the Liaison Committee which investigated the presence of the contraband sugar in the country.
Kieni MP Kanini Kega, who is the chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Trade, Industry and Cooperatives tabled the report before the House on Thursday.
A section of MPs in the three committees Alfred Keter (Nandi Hills), Junet Mohamed (Suna East), and Benjamin Washiali (Mumias East), strongly differed during the ongoing retreat for the three committees at Mombasa's Serena Beach Hotel.
Junet said the MPs did a shoddy work following allegations that those who investigated the matter received Sh30,000 each to dismantle the investigations.
Junet said the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Kenya Bureau of Standard should now takeover and start investigating the matter.
"The report did not address the issues that Kenyans wanted to know. It is now the turn of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and other investigating agencies to launch new investigations. I believe we have good investigating teams including experts from the Kenya Bureau of Standard that can take the matter to another level," Junet said.
The National Assembly Minority Whip differed with Keter, saying there was no need for another Parliamentary Committee to waste taxpayer's money to investigate the matter once again.
According to Keter, the matter should now be investigated by the Parliamentary Health Committee.
"Because sugar touches on the lives of Kenyans, the best committee now to handle it is the Health committee," said the Nandi Hills lawmaker.
However, Washiali who was invited as a friend of the committee, differed with both Keter and Junet, saying MPs from the sugar-growing regions will meet and elaborate on on Monday and further called on the president to salvage the matter.
"We are calling on President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and revive the sugar sector."
