An elected Jubilee MP from Kisii County has explained why the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) should pass through Gusii region from Naivasha to Kisumu.
On Wednesday, Nyaribari Chache MP Richard Tong'i while speaking during the awarding of CDF bursary cheques to 3,202 students at Keumbu said SGR will pass through Gusii region to Kisumu because the Gusii community voted overwhelmingly for President Uhuru Kenyatta during the 2017 polls.
"As a community we must benefit from the Standard Gauge Railway line to be constructed from Naivasha to Kisumu because the Gusii community voted in large numbers for the government of the day," he said.
The vocal legislator insisted that SGR must pass through Gusii region so that locals can be able to transport farm produce to various markets in the country.
He challenged elected leaders from Kisii and Nyamira counties to step up efforts to convince the head of state to allow the SGR to pass through Gusii region.
"As elected leaders, we should camp at President Uhuru Kenyatta's office to ensure SGR construction is extended to Gusii region for our people to benefit as well," he added.
Tong'i also reiterated that the handshake between President Kenyatta and Raila Odinga is working.
