15 Kenya Power managers charged with corruption have been offered Sh200 million to resign.
The offer has been given by the entity’s board as it wants to offload the managers and give them time to deal with their cases.
The managers were arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and charged with fraud in the purchase of transformers.
Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji said there was criminal culpability in the tender to buy the gadgets.
The top managers are facing more than six counts, including committing economic crimes, abuse of office and conspiracy to defeat justice.
Due to the case, they were suspended and will take home half their salary until the cases are completed.
Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter said the move to offer the suspects millions in early retirement was the board’s way of trying to strike a balance.
He added that Kenya Power has to be fair to the suspects and also take into account its own operations not to be affected by the suspension of the 15.
“We have 33 witnesses lined up. Only seven have given evidence. The case might drag for years and take a toll on the management of the parastatal,” Keter said.
