Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Thursday made history by becoming the first foreign President to board Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train.

The Ugandan Head of State arrived in Nairobi from Mombasa shortly after 8 pm. 

He was received by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto. Museveni, who arrived in the country on Wednesday could not hide his joy for the maiden ride. 

Earlier on Thursday, Museveni and Uhuru had toured the Mombasa Port before he boarded the train.

“President @KagutaMuseveni was received by his host President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President @WilliamsRuto on arrival at the Nairobi SGR Terminus. President Museveni was accompanied by CS Monica Juma and CS @JamesMacharia_during the four hour journey #KenyaUgandaRelations,” read a statement from State House after the trip

The government of Uganda is looking forward to reap big from the transportation of goods on the SGR in the coming years. President Kenyatta assured Museveni of cooperation following the decision to work together.

The two heads of State said that their unity will benefit both states. The Kenyan government has allocated Uganda a piece of land to construct a dry port in Mombasa.

Museveni is expected to deliver a public lecture at Kenyatta University Main Campus this afternoon.
