The most fascinating thing about our country is that it is always a political season. Immediately after elections, talks begin about the next. This time around, Deputy President William Ruto dominates it.
March 9, 2018, conveniently changed the narrative of our politics. Raila Odinga came out of the opposition dungeons in the now-famous handshake, effectively turning DP Ruto into an opposition leader. We have witnessed Ruto going around the country, and not more than once attacking Raila Odinga.
At one time, he spoke of how Baba had joined the party so that he can foil its plans. On a charm offensive in the Coast, the DP told a gathering about how he was kicked out of ODM, the same way some ODM rebel MPs in the Coast were being done to.
The talks of a referendum provided Ruto with another chance to act as an opposition leader. At first, he seemed to oppose then warmed up to it, saying that he wants the issues discussed, not a creation of positions for Raila.
With the momentum picking up on the referendum talk, it remains to be seen where DP Ruto will fall into. He could oppose it to test his political might as we head towards 2022.
In the meantime, DP Ruto is engaging Raila in duels here and there, but the man from Bondo seems to be winning, recently bagging a prestigious African Union (AU) post.
