Word meanings always clash when compared between two different communities.
Such a scenario is evident between the Kikuyu and Luo of Kenya, a big difference appearing in their naming, with some Kikuyu names having very different meanings on the other side.
Here are some Kikuyu names that have funny meanings in the Luo vocabulary.
1. Ng'ang'a
Ng'ang'a is one of the most popular name for Kikuyu males.
In the Luo language, however, it has a very different meaning, which is also very funny too.
A ng'ang'a in the Luo vocabulary is the Glossy Ibis, a black bird with long legs and a long beak and which spends most of its time in the mud and litter.
Kikuyus call it 'Kegogo'.
2. Nyambura
Nyambura is a female Kikuyu name, which to a larger extent insinuates that the holder was born during the rainy season.
To Luos, however, Nyambura is simply a kitten, with the word originating from 'mbura' which is a cat.
3. Ndung'u
Usually pronounced as 'Ndong'o, it is a male name which is also very popular among the Kikuyu.
In Luo, however, ndong'o means to drip something or let a liquid drip out.
It generates from the word 'ndong'' which means drip.
