Students residing in the newly refurbished hostel H have now been forced to dig a little bit deeper into their pockets so as to survive as they can no longer cook in their rooms.

“We were not prepared for this stuff of not cooking, so it was like an ambush and we are facing challenges like financial issues because our parents are also not aware of it.  So whenever we tell them that we want to buy food it becomes a problem because we were used to the lifestyle of cooking in the hostel which was cheaper,” said a third-year student and also a resident of Hostel H who sought anonymity.

The hostel which was initially planned to accommodate both male and female students is fitted with power regulators and sockets which makes it impossible for the students to connect coils which are used for cooking.

A close source who also wanted to remain anonymous revealed that genitors at the hostel went around warning students against cooking. The students were also warned against possessing sufurias.

“Our wing had lost power after it was alleged that someone had tried cooking. So the genitors came around looking for those who have coils in the room. They also advised us to get rid of our sufurias as the action will be taken against anyone who will be found cooking,” the source revealed.

The students have now been left with no other option but to eat at the school mess and hotels. A good number of the students prefer the latter hence making life more expensive.

The university is currently renovating the hostel as it gradually gets rid of the cooking culture in the rooms.
