When he was released alongside the rest of the Kapenguria 6 team in 1961, Ramogi Achieng' Oneko immediately ventured into politics.
And though he was a native of Bondo (currently under Siaya County) in Nyanza province, the former freedom fighter opted to vie for a seat far from home, going for the Nakuru constituency seat in Rift Valley.
In 1963, he became the first Member of Parliament for the Nakuru Town constituency on the independence Kenya African National Union (KANU) ticket.
At the same time, his former prison mate and fellow anti-colonialism campaigner Jomo Kenyatta became the president.
Other people whom they were jailed with at the Lokitaung' Prison were Bildad Kaggia, Kung'u Karumba, Paul Ngei and Fred Kubai.
And when President Kenyatta completely assumed power, Oneko was appointed into the cabinet as the Tourism, Communication and Broadcasting minister.
However, his parliamentary tenure was short-lived, seeing him leave the slot three years later when he as well resigned from his Ministerial seat to join his friend Jaramogi Oginga Odinga in the opposition.
Jaramogi was Kenyatta's Vice President between 1963 and 1966, after which a bitter fallout occurred.
He left Kanu for the opposition's Kenya People's Union (KPU).
Their fallout with Kenyatta landed them in trouble as the head of state now turned against his former allies, a situation that took them off elective politics for a long time.
Oneko would later briefly make a political comeback in 1992, but this time as the MP for the Rarieda seat in Siaya county.
This too was short lived as he lost his seat in the 1997 elections.
