Writing on Twitter on Monday, Dr Aukot faulted the move, suggesting that it was against the presumption of innocence until proven guilty principle.

The Punguza Mizigo Initiative chief exponent took issue with suspects losing their rights on the basis of being accused of involvement in criminal activities.

"This statement must be fake. How can a suspect be adjudged "guilty" by losing rights or already existing privileges merely because you're suspected to have committed crime? What a misnomer!" the Thirdway Alliance supremo wrote.

The police statement came on the heels of the arrest and arraignment in court of embattled Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino, who faces murder charges over a shooting incident that occurred at the B Club in Nairobi.

"To avoid compromising and demeaning the very essence of which the police is mandated, the NPS shall not provide security to VIPs who are involved or suspected to be involved in crime. Until they are cleared by the courts. Those VIPs who are civilian firearm holders shall have their certificates cancelled," the police statement, posted on Twitter, read in part.
