The National Police Service has announced that VIPs involved in criminal activities will have their firearms and security withdrawn.

In a statement titled 'WITHDRAWAL OF SECURITY DETAIL FOR VIPs INVOLVED IN CRIME' shared on its Twitter handle, the NPS stated that the security and firearms will only be reinstated in the event that the courts clear the VIPs.

"To avoid compromising and demeaning the very essence of which the police is mandated, the NPS shall not provide security to VIPs who are involved or suspected to be involved in crime. Until they are cleared by the courts. Those VIPs who are civilian firearm holders shall have their certificates cancelled, " the NPS statement read in part.

The statement comes in the wake of the arrest and arraignment in court of Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino over a shooting incident at the B Club in the capital Nairobi.

La enforcement authorities have said that they intend to press charges of attempted murder against the outspoken Orange Democratic Movement (ODM)) legislator.

High profile public figures are usually accorded security by the state to protect them from threat given their stature in the society.

The security offered to them depends on their stature and a threat level assessment carried out by the security agencies.
