He won the prize for the sixth time after warding off stiff competition from Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool's Virgil Van Dijk for the 2019 FIFA FIFPro men's award, that was held last evening, in Milan, Italy.

Messi had last won the trophy in 2015 when it was jointly represented as FIFA/Ballon d'Or. 

US national women's team Megan Rapinoe won the women award beating Lucy Bronze and Alex Morgan.

Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp was voted the best male coach of the year, after seeing off Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino while US national women coach Jill Ellis took the women accolade.

Liverpool's shot-stopper, Brazilian Alisson Bekker beat City's Ederson and Barca's Marc ter-Stegen to become the best goalkeeper, while Dutch captain Sari van Veenendaal won the women trophy after edging out Chile's Christiane Endler and Swede Hedvig Lindahl.

Debrecen's Dániel Zsóri won FIFA Ferenc Puskás Award (the best goal scored in the world for the last one year) thanks to his classical goal against Ferencváros on 16 February 2019. 

He beat Messi's effort for Barcelona against Real Betis and River Plate's Juan Quintero goal against Racing Club.

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa was given Fair Play award, following his exemplary action as he asked his team to let Aston Villa score a goal after Leeds went ahead when Villa player was down and injured.

Meanwhile, a Brazilian mother, Silvia Grecco, was gifted the world fan award. It is reported that she narrates Palmeiras' match to her blind son Nikolas, who was born five months premature.
