Sharon Otieno’s unborn child was buried last week at her grandfather’s homestead in Homabay County, in a brief ceremony attended by family members and close relatives.
The slain Rongo University student was 7 months pregnant before her murder early this month.
But what many people are not aware of is the fact that the baby boy was given a name before being buried.
The Standard reports that despite being a boy, the infant was named after her mother.
Sharon’s grandfather Samuel Odege, said that the local culture requires that any human being be given a name before burial.
“He is a baby boy and we have named him baby Sharon. Our reason for doing this is to abide by our culture which requires that any human being who gets out of the mother must have a name,” he is quoted by the Standard.
On his part, Odege’s brother John Olweya said that every grave must have the name of the person buried in it.
“Whenever rituals are performed, the dead can only be remembered through their identities during such ceremonies,” he said.
DNA tests revealed that the late Ms Otieno was impregnated by Migori Governor Zachary Okoth Obado.
The governor is at the centre of investigations involving Sharon Otieno’s death.
