Nyamira Senator Erick Okong’o has urged the County government to automate revenue collection so as to stop the money from ending up in individuals’ pockets.
Okong’o claims that the county of Nyamira has been losing over Sh150 million annually due to the mode of revenue collection that is not transparent and accountable.
“Our county collects over Sh250 million annually but more than a half of it ends into individual pockets. Out of the money collected, only Sh97 million is banked and we wonder where the rest of the money vanishes to because it can’t be traced anywhere, this means there are some officials who pocket the money which is supposed to help the poor citizens improve services in the County,” noted the legislator.
Speaking in an interview in a local radio station, Thursday, Okong’o challenged Governor John Nyagarama-led administration to embrace technology in collecting the revenue which he said can improve compared to the manual mode.
“This manual form of collecting the revenue is not transparent as it encourages corruption among the collectors and business people. Once the service is automated, we can collect more than what we are seeing now and the money can be of great use to all county residents than when some few individuals pocket it,” he insisted.
Nyamira is among the few counties in the country which has not automated the revenue collection despite the transformation being budgeted for in the last six financial years.
