Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has said the level of ethnicity in police cells is worrying.
Speaking to journalists moments after he was released from police custody following his arrest on Friday, Malala said that tribalism has taken root in the entire nation and has now found its way into the cells.
He recounted how he was mistreated by police officers because of his tribe. He narrated that he lost consciousness while in police cell but nobody bothered to take care of him.
“I was arrested without being told anything. I came to this police station and I didn’t know what I had done and even in the OB, I didn’t know what they had booked me for. And I want to say that I was really frustrated on the first night I was taken to a room which had no aeration," he said
"Police kicking me up and down. What surprises me is the level of ethnicity in this country. We had police officers from a particular tribe wanting to harass, kicking me up and down I even lost conscious,” he added.
Leaders from the NASA side have condemned the arrest of the senator. They have termed the move by the government to arrest him as malicious and ill-driven.
