Kibabii University students on Friday pitched tent and endured long queues to elect their new student leaders in a smooth and peaceful election.
From the morning session to afternoon, students voted and elected 18 Congress delegates who were elected in a democratic process on a popular vote as stipulated in the SOKU constitution and University Elections amendment Act, 2016.
The Congress thereafter elected the Student Governing Council as per the Act.
Collins Simiyu beat all odds and was declared the New Student Governing Council Chair of Kibabii University after garnering 11 votes against his close competitor Boniface Odhiambo who garnered 7 votes in the hotly contested race.
Other Student Governing council elected were Mwalimu Mukunzu who won the position of the Treasurer; Mandela Shem won the Security and Accommodation docket; Stephen Abong'o won the Secretary-General position and Obure Onchagwa won the Academic secretary docket.
The incoming leaders have been challenged to unite the students irrespective of the political inclination as they are all bound by the academic goal.
While acknowledging the Victors, Kibabii University Dean Of Students Dr.Alice Mutai urged the new leaders to maintain peace and share the unity talk towards academic achievements.
"I am grateful for all who participated in the elections. The exercise has been free, fair and credible. We have held peaceful elections and let us all keep peace," she said
Addressing students moments after his victory, the Simiyu thanked all for trusting in him and vowed to deliver all he promised to better Kibabii University.
"I want to thank all students. My victory is your victory and I will work for you since you have believed in me as we are all Students working towards academic prosperity," he said.
The Student Governing Council Chairperson and Secretary General are expected to nominate delegates to participate in the elections of the Kenya University Students Organization (KUSO) in which the top seat has attracted two great contesters; Fikirini Jacobs Chairperson Pwani University and Ann Mvurya the Chairperson University of Nairobi.
Other students leaders elected on Friday to the Congress include Martin Mureithi, Naomi Chemtai, Ang'oro Gerald, Kimani Ian and Alex Okeyo Otieno who were voted as new Faculty/departments/Schools Academic representatives.
