A section of Bodaboda riders at Daraja Mbili market in Kisii has protested the closure of Daraja Mbili slaughterhouse.
The riders claimed that they have incurred huge loses since the closure of the facility last week.
"We used to ferry customers to and from the facility when it was operational. Now that it is closed, the number of customers has gone down something that has negatively affected our daily earnings," said Jared Kebati, one of the riders who also challenged Kisii County Government under the leadership of Governor James Ongwae to intervene and ensure operations at the facility resumes.
Another rider, Arnold Bogonko, argued that the closure of the slaughterhouse by NEMA officials was ill-advised because, until today, no renovation works have started at the facility.
"Closing the facility is not the solution because butchers pay taxes to the county government. NEMA should find a lasting solution because this is not the first time the facility is being closed down over dirtiness," stated Bogonko.
However, in a quick rejoinder, NEMA official Robert Orina said the facility will not be re-opened before the state is improved.
"Proper drainage and disposal of waste at the facility must be put in place before the re-opening of the facility. As of now, the slaughterhouse remains closed," said Orina.
