In a tweet on Tuesday, Mwangi said that the move by the DCI is commendable. The activist cum politician said that Kinoti has proven that he means well for this nation, adding that he needs the support of Kenyans in the fight to sanitize different sectors of the economy.

“I celebrate Mr George Kinoti, Director, Directorate of Criminal Investigations. He is working very hard to professionalize @DCI_Kenya. Wishing him success and good luck in 2020,” he tweeted.

The DCI announced that the flying squad unit has now been replaced by the Sting Squad headquarters. The new unit will play the same role as a flying squad but in a slightly different manner as it seeks to end cases of crime in different areas.

"To replace the Flying Squad and create an auxiliary support team on identified, researched and profiled crimes, another squad has been formed and named “STING SQUAD HEADQUARTERS” (SSH). It will have a maximum of 50 specialized trained officers who will respond to specific cases," DCI tweeted.

The STING SQUAD will handle the following cases: armed robberies, kidnappings, motor vehicle theft, sale and distribution of contraband and substandard goods.

The disbandment comes a day after the US Ambassador to Kenya hailed Kinoti for his spirited fight to end graft in different offices since he took over the position.
