He was a no-nonsense politician from Ukambani and he was loved by many people. Ngei was among the legendary Kenyans who strongly fought for the country’s independence. He was also among the famous Kapenguria six men who were jailed and detained in prison after being accused of supporting mau-mau freedom fighters

After their release from jail in 1961, Kenya got independence a few years later and the new government was formed. Kenyatta was then the head of state and was assisted with other leaders from the different part of the country. Paul Ngei refused to join the by then ruling party Kanu. He formed his own party, the Akamba Peoples party that he led for a while before joining KANU. He never wanted Kenyatta to lead him as he had deluded himself equal to Mzee. He also strongly criticize Kenyatta’s government and his ruling after  being dishonored and denied the secretary general post by the party

Even after he was appointed in government as a minister, it’s said that Mzee Jomo Kenyatta wasn’t at peace when he has not talked to him. He used to call him daily just to know where he was and also to confirm that he has retired in bed too. Kenyatta used to do that because he knows Ngei in and out and what’s the man is capable of doing.

Today Paul Ngei is in Kenya’s books of records and he is still remembered for his efforts in fighting for the country’s independence.
