According to DCI, the officers acted on a tip-off that led to rounding off the nine suspects although others managed to escape.

“Following a series of reported cases of robbery with violence and gang rape of Maseno University Students, DCI officers yesterday acting on a tip-off arrested 9 suspects. Stolen chairs, bhang, pangas and claw bars confiscated. Other suspects escaped but are being pursued by detectives,” indicated the DCI Kenya on its Twitter handle.

The suspects arrested are: Patrick Okanda, Peter Amango Sande, Geoffrey Okiya Mutunga, Obed Panyako, Peter Obed, David Ndegu, Samuel Kuya, Stephen Oloo and Nahashon Arena.

They are expected to be arraigned in court soon after investigations are completed.

Crimes such as theft and robbery with violence have reportedly been on the rise within Maseno University, and areas surrounding the institution.

Last month, an Mpesa agent was robbed an unknown amount of money before two Maseno University students were attacked by unknown men, while going back to their hostels at midnight later.

In the past, there has been a blame game between locals and students, with each group accusing the other of being behind the increased rate of crime in Maseno.
