Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili popularly known as Babu Owino has come out to speak on the ongoing debate concerning Kenyan music.
In a message seen on his Twitter account, the former Student Organization of Nairobi University (SONU) chairman pushed for Kenyan music to be played on Kenyan radio and TV stations.
“Itakuwa poa tuki-support wasani wetu. Kenya iko na very talented artists. To all our radio stations, DJs, TV stations and Kenyans kindly #PlayKeMusic Cc @nebulazzkenya @jalangoo @thekingkaka @mainawakageni @daddyowen @gabupunit @willy.paul.msafi @khaligraph_jones @citizentvkenya,” tweeted Babu Owino.
The vocal legislator's tweet comes just a day after Mombasa governor Hassan Ali Joho sent the same message to Kenyans, DJs, radio and TV presenters.
“#PlayKeMusic cc @willy.paul.msafi @gatesmgenge@chris001ke @daddyowen @realshinski@thenaiboi @officialsusumila @jalangoo,” said Joho.
The two joined a campaign started by Kenya’s top rapper Khaligraph Jones aka Papa Jones aka the OG, who wanted Kenyan music to be given priority over Tanzanian and Nigerian songs.
The movement to play Kenyan music from politicians, musicians and Kenyans has attracted the attention of top radio presenter Jalang’o who through his social media accounts revealed that a meeting has been organized for the DJs, presenters and musicians to discuss on this heated matter.
“#PlayKenyaBuyKenya Presenters and Djs are now ready to meet with Artists and within a week the date will be announced...Venue is @kicc_kenyathanks to @nanawanjikugecaga ! But then again even if we meet and agree on the way forward another big stake holder is the FANS! The question is DO YOU EVEN LOVE KENYA MUSIC AND ARE OUR ARTISTS HAVING FULL SUPPORT OF THE FANS?” posted Jalang’o on his Instagram.
