Kenyans might soon start celebrating a new public holiday if the government will heed to a request by a group of elders.
The Elders Association of Kenya wants March 9 declared a public holiday.
The holiday will be for Kenyans to celebrate the day Kenya’s two political bigwigs, President Uhuru Kenyatta and his rival in the 2013 and 2017 presidential races Raila Odinga, buried their differences.
According to Citizentv.co.ke. Martin Kinyanjui alias Mutarara, a leader of the caucus, has said the day is important in the life of Kenyans.
“God has answered our prayers through the March 9, 2018 handshake between the President and former Prime Minister, the tension and uncertainty that existed came to an end,” he said.
He added: “We’ll even go further asking that the ninth day of March be declared a public holiday. The unity day is when all of us should invade streets with festivities and celebrate this famous historic day.”
It will be interesting to see if the government will honour the request and issue Kenyans with the new holiday.
The truce by the two leaders saw the country experience political stability.
The handshake has been lauded by many arguing the country was on the brink of collapse before Raila and Uhuru agreed to make peace.
