Haji who co-chairs the committee with his Siaya counterpart James Orengo said that governance structure is one of the nine points agenda the committee is discussing.

He said that the committee is rooting for public participation on the best governance structure for the country.

“We will travel around the country to seek views on a governance structure that is best and appropriate for Kenya,” he said at Mogadashe grounds in Garissa Town on Saturday.

Haji asked Kenyans to turn up for public forums once the process starts.

The Garissa senator’s statement could mean that referendum was part of the agenda agreed on between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga during the famous March 9 handshake.

The referendum debate has heated up with politicians across the political divide making different stands.

Raila has been quoted saying that the referendum is unstoppable and was a key part of the truce deal with President Kenyatta.

A section of politicians is backing Raila’s referendum push while others among them Garissa Township MP Aden Duale are against the referendum.

Duale claims that the referendum push is a plot to lock Deputy President William Ruto out of the 2022 presidential election.

On Saturday, Ruto declared support for referendum push.

He, however, raised issues in the manner in which the referendum is being proposed.
