A group of about 10 police officers were guarding a car that was allegedly ferrying stolen cattle that had been slaughtered.

According to witnesses, the car developed mechanical problems at the Greensteds estate and curious members of the public realized it was packed with slaughtered cattle demanding an explanation.

The occupants fled the scene as police from a nearby police post arrived at the scene.

Residents who had reported cattle theft in Kasambara, Thogonoi among other areas recently, were angered saying 'those must be the people disturbing them with cattle theft'.

The armed Administration Police, however, guarded the vehicle to keep off the angry crowd.

Moments later, a group of witty locals lied to the police that they had spotted the occupants of the car hiding in a nearby maize plantation.

The officers moved into the plantation to waylay the suspects.

As soon as they ducked into the plantation, residents set the car ablaze.
