Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has given Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai a 120-hour ultimatum to arrest officers who assaulted Multimedia University students who were holding demonstrations on Monday.
The students were protesting against reckless driving by motorists on Magadi Road after one of their comrades was involved in a hit-and-run accident.
Through his official Facebook page, Owino condemned the police brutality meted against innocent students who were exercising their democratic right of holding peaceful demonstrations.
"I am deeply concerned by the intolerance demonstrated by these rogue police officers against young Kenyans agitating for their rights. Why should you beat up innocent people peacefully marching for safer roads?" asked Owino.
"I, therefore, issue a 120-hour ultimatum to the Inspector General of Police to order the immediate arrest and prosecution of the police perpetrators of these acts of torture that are contrary to the spirit and letter of our Constitution," added the MP.
Owino noted that he has written to the National Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to review the Monday events with a view to ensuring those found culpable are held accountable as well as ensuring that victims of the said violence are compensated.
"In the meantime, all those arrested in my view are political prisoners and must be released forthwith. God bless Multimedia University, God bless Kenya," said the ODM MP.
