Cosmas Mutua Nzolo scored a B+ in his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam securing admission at the Multimedia University of Kenya in 2014 but his joy has been cut short.
Nzolo was forced out of class after suffering an accident that left his right leg with serious injuries while in his second year. The accident that occurred along Mbagathi road changed the trajectory of his life.
In an exclusive interview, Nzolo plaintively narrates the misfortunes that have since dimmed his life adding to the pain of losing his parents at the tender age of six.
“I was born and raised up in Makueni and my parents passed away when I was just six. I struggled all through but finally I managed to go to campus to pursue Journalism and Mass Communication,” he says.
"After the accident, I was unable to take side jobs which helped me stay afloat in campus and my relatives wouldn’t hear any of my pleas for financial support,” he adds, saying he was forced to go back to Makueni to start life afresh.
Nzolo managed to secure a job as a gardener in one of the villager’s homes and saved up over time before making a comeback to the city to try out his luck in a better paying job but luck wasn’t on his side.
“I got turned down,” says Nzolo noting that he landed a watchman’s job in one of the firms where he has since been working in the hope to save up and complete his studies.
In spite of all the challenges he has been through, Nzolo remains hopeful saying he has learned how to cope with life’s challenges and remains optimistic that his dream will one day come to be.
