Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba has warned residents in the county against hiring underage housemaids.
The commissioner urged residents to ensure their domestic helps are over the age of 18 before offering them jobs.
Speaking on Monday in Nyamira town, Mariba said anyone intending to work as a house help must show the potential employer their original national identity card.
"It is shocking that several girls from the villages across the county have dropped out of school to work as house helps. I hereby issue a directive to all residents that anyone seeking to hire a house help must ask for an original identity card before hiring the maid," said Mariba.
The county security boss further noted that the directive takes effect immediately.
Mariba said the new directive will see the young girls who opt to drop out of school continue with their education because they will not have any available employment opportunities.
The county boss reiterated that anyone found culpable of hiring a house help without an original national identity card will be arrested and face prosecution.
"Child labour is an offence punishable by law. There will be no excuse and police will arrest any resident caught hiring a house help without an identity card," he added.
