In a video that has gone viral on social media, Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua is calling on the government to tame Chinese entrant into Kenya’s economy.

The first time lawmaker, through an amendment bill to the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act, 2015, argues that contracts of less than Sh1 billion should be left exclusively to Kenyans to build capacity for the local firms and promote the implementation of the Big Four Agenda.

Gachagua says the if left untamed, the Chinese will play a business strategy where they will enter the country and make sure local capacity in business, as well as other sectors, is killed.

“After the local capacity is dead, they will then hike their prices and we will have nothing to do because we will not have capacity by then,” Gachagua said.

The first time MP wondered where Chinese nationals are getting visas to do menial jobs in the country.

“Why do you need to import someone to come to be a driver of an excavator here? Why are we allowing people to come to do jobs that Kenyans can do?” Gachagua said.

He called on Interior CS Fred Matiang’I to ensure jobs that can go to Kenyans are protected.
