In what could yet again raise temperatures in parliament over importation of food to Kenya, Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter claims that he was served with plastic fish.
Plastic foods are popular in the Asian countries and for years, Kenya has never permitted traders to sell them within the country.
Taking to his Twitter account, the Jubilee rebel MP decried that he was served plastic fish, in a hotel that he least expected to be duped given he's a loyal client.
According to him, he has been hearing about plastic food being imported to the country but has never imagined being served in eateries.
"I have been hearing stories of people being served plastic fish and I had never imagined or believed that one can serve individuals with plastic food, but today I had a worst experience ever in my life to have been served plastic fish in a place I could never imagine.#FakeFish," he said.
However, the second term legislator, who is not a stranger to controversies, did not reveal the identity of the hotel where he was served the alleged fake fish.
Last year, President Uhuru Kenyatta proposed banning of fish imports from China, arguing that the competition was being unfair to local traders.
However, the ban was lifted early this year under unclear circumstances despite the order from the president seeking to control importation of fish.
“We were forced to lift the ban to ease the shortage after a huge consignment of fish got stuck at the port, impacting negatively on local supplies,” said an official at the Fisheries Department who is not allowed to speak on the matter.
Kenya imports approximately 1.8 million kilogramme of fish every month. It produces about 135,000 tonnes annual against an annual demand of 500,000 tonnes.
Fish imports from China hit Sh1.7 billion last year as Kenya’s appetite for Chinese fish continued to grow with the country seeking to bridge a deficit.
