The government will not tolerate athletes engaging in doping to gain an advantage over their competitors, Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed has warned.
Speaking on Monday after visiting Athletics Kenya headquarters at Riadha House, Amina said that the President Uhuru Kenyatta-led government has no room for athletes who want to use shortages to win contests.
She also said that the government fully supports the move by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) to ban several athletes from performing at the international level after finding them guilty of the offense.
She noted that it is shameful for athletes to use illegal means to win medals when their competitors are working extra hard to ensure that they stand out from the rest at the end of the day.
Amina encouraged athletes to undertake their training with the seriousness it deserves so that they can win the competition when such times come instead of resolving to dope.
"Kenya is ranked in category A of countries that are adversely affected by doping and must go through stringent measures like three tests out of competition and one in competition. We must support these measures hence we shall not allow dopers to go and shame this country again," said Mohammed, as quoted by Daily Nation.
Several athletes from the country have been banned from taking part in contests at the international stage after they engaged in doping-related activities.
Amina also said that that government plans to construct more stadia for their training.
