I will share with you a true story of a friend of mine who recently lost Sh20,000 after receiving a call from a lady who identified herself as a Safaricom agent.

The lady said they were running a promotion on M-PESA withdrawal from ATM with a winner getting Sh100,000.

To be a winner, the alleged Safaricom agent said he must transact through M-PESA ATM by keying in 555555, warning that he should not reveal his M-PESA PIN number.

The lady then broke the good news to him that with the look of things he might be the winner of the price but then he was only left with one step to go.

She then asked him to read out to her the authorisation code and ensures that he won't miss out on any character as they were going to use it to determine the winner.

Now, eager to win the cash, my friend read it out carefully, little did he know that M-PESA ATM withdrawal only requires authorisation code, one's phone number and the transaction is successful.

The lady then asked him to remain online throughout as those who were offline might miss the chance which will then be given to another user who was online on the time they were going to make their calls.

It only took a day for a friend of mine to realise that his money had gone for good while trying to pay his electricity bill.

And when he contacted the Safaricom customer care, he was informed that he had withdrawn his money through M-PESA ATM transactions.

So be careful with these types of people lest you will learn the hard way.
