Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i was on Friday cheered as he read President Uhuru Kenyatta's speech at Nyanturago during the burial of Dr Hezron Manduku.
Dr Matiang'i was given more powers by President Uhuru Kenyatta during reorganisation of government ministries last week, something that thrilled Gusii region.
The President shifted Presidential Delivery Unit from State House to Matiang'i's office, substantively making him defacto super minister in Jubilee administration.
While stepping up, mourners cheers Dr Matiang'i, who delivered the speech on behalf of President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was set to join mourners.
"Before I read the president's speech, allow me to say that thank you for your support. If I don't do my work properly, I will be a big let down to Abagusii," he said amid cheers.
"We have to deliver to the people. I am closely working with Governors John Nyagarama and James Ongwae. We shall expand infrastructure in Gusii region," he added.
Virtually all politicians who spoke apart from South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro, supported the calls to have Dr Matiang'i contest for Presidency in 2022.
ODM leader Raila Odinga however, cautioned area leaders from pushing Matiang'i to contest, saying that the move could be taken advantage off by anti-handshake team.
In his speech, President Uhuru Kenyatta said the death of Dr Hezron Manduku, a former Nyaribari Masaba MP, was a big loss to the country.
“The death is a big loss to the family and the nation. There is no doubt that Manduku will be remembered by many,” Uhuru said in a speech read by Matiang’i.
