Trade and Industrialization CS Peter Munya will yet again return to Nyanza upon the order by opposition leader Raila Odinga, it has emerged.
On Thursday, Raila's spokesman Dennis Onyango confirmed that all ministers were ordered to work closely with Mr Odinga especially on Agriculture, Infrastructure and trade.
Speaking at Opoda Farm on Friday, Mr Odinga said Munya will tour the lake side city as part of the wider process to revamp Kisumu Cotton Mills.
Raila, who was accompanied by MPs Oburu Oginga (East African Legislative Assembly), Fred Ouda (Kisumu Central) and Daniel Tuitoek (Mogotio), asked the government to hasten plans to revive Kisumu Cotton Mills (Kicomi).
“You saw Rivatex being revived and we are expecting that Kicomi and other factories in this region will also be revived. Munya will be here next week,” he said.
“Cotton was our main cash crop but it failed because of the monopolies that controlled the market. We are on a path to reviving factories such as Kicomi, which will provide market for our produce and also be a source of employment,” Raila said.
On his part, Oburu said revival of Kisumu Cotton Mills will help farmers boost their livelihoods in the region, arguing that it will be a major source of income.
“This factory provided a reliable market for our cotton farmers and we are requesting the government to see that Kicomi is back on its feet,” said Oburu.
It's the second time Munya, a former Meru governor, will be returning to Kisumu. Recently, he joined Raila in launching of Special Economic Zone in the region.
