The incident happened on Sunday noon with attempts by area residents to put the fire out once it erupted in one of the affected housed proving futile.

Mr Mohammed Hilo, a resident, said that the police and firefighters were called in after the neighbours failed to break into the house to put the fire off.

“We tried to break into the house to no avail as the fire had spread to the adjacent house. We called the police and firefighters who rushed to the scene,” he said.

The incident was confirmed by Kisumu County Commander Benson Maweu who said that a probe has since been launched in a bid to unravel the cause of the fire.

And while some residents believe that the fire might have emanated from an electric fault, a section of others suspected that it was a case of arson attack.

Luckily, the houses were empty at the time, owing to an ingoing eviction of tenants to give room for the expansion of the Kisumu Port.

The expansion has as well seen some establishments, including business ventures set up in the corporation land surrounding the port location demolished.
