About four months ago, Hivisasa published a story highlighting a case where a leading real estate firm was accused of defrauding clients. In the story, Urithi Housing Co-operative Society was accused of selling 'grabbed land' to unsuspecting buyers. The buyers claimed that they had not been issued with title deeds days after clearing the payments.

The story was covered by Ndung'u Wa Gathua a Hivisasa writer based in Kiambu county.  Gathua covered the story after picking up complaints from several land buyers on social media platforms.

The buyers used Twitter and Facebook to air their grievances about their alleged frustrations with Urithi. The buyers claimed that despite buying land, they were unable to put up houses.

Two months down the line, Urithi emerged with an explanation for the delay in title deed issuance. Gathua contacted Urithi Housing Cooperative Society where an explanation was given on how its model works right from the time a member begins making payments to the time he/she is handed over the keys or title deed.

Gathua interviewed, Urithi Housing Digital Director Hillary Kevin sho said that all concerns by buyers were addressed. He further clarified that the platform does not sell grabbed land.  Kevin noted that the complaints by the buyers were due to a lack of understanding of the buying model.

The society's digital director added that Urithi operates on a 'socio-economic model of housing’. You can read more about the model here.
