A leader of an opposition party in Zambia has been released by a Zambian court after being charged with allegations of insulting President Edgar Lungu.

Chisimba Kambwili, leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was arrested on Wednesday after he was captured on video referring to Lungu as a "dog".

He was charged before Magistrate Lamech Mwale, who was told that he called Lungu " dogs from Chawama", Chawama being Lungu's former constituency of residence.

The president also represented the area in parliament before becoming the nation's president.

Kambwili whose party in 2016 broke away from Lungu's Patriotic Front, before winning its first parliamentary position in a by-election in April this year denied the claims.

He and other opposition leaders have been at loggerheads with the government over claims that its cracking down on dissent, claims the government has denied.

He was released on a Sh50,000 kwacha, about Sh382,000 with the case set to he heard again on September 30.

Adressing the press outside the courtroom, the claimed that he was misunderstood and was not insulting the president.

Before his arrest, two days prior, the state registrar shut down the party on grounds that its constitution is flawed.
