For the better part of Wednesday, grief engulfed Bonyaikoma village in Nyatieko location, Kitutu Chache South Constituency in Kisii County after a 23-year-old man was electrocuted to death.
According to an eye witness Moses Ongeri, the deceased identified as Zachary Onyonka Makwabe met his death while he was cutting a prolonged tree branch which fell on electricity cables due to the ongoing rains being experienced in the area.
"Onyonka had cut the branch successfully and as he was carrying it away, the branch mistakenly came into contact with the electric cable leading to his electrocution," said Ongeri.
Efforts by locals to rush the deceased to a hospital could not yield fruits because he died on arrival at Christamarriane hospital in Kisii.
Area chief Lawrence Omari confirmed the incident saying the death of Onyonka has left villagers in shock.
"The body of the deceased was moved to Christamarriane hospital morgue waiting for burial. I urge residents not to plant trees where electricity wires pass to avoid unnecessary deaths caused by electric shock," Omari stated.
The administrator challenged Kenya Power officers to traverse the whole location to ensure trees near electricity wires are cut down to curb similar deaths.
