Three people have been arrested on suspicion of engaging in burglary and theft in Mlolongo, Mavoko sub-county of Machakos County.

The trio, two men and a woman, were arrested on Sunday night at Gateway mall along Nairobi-Mombasa road. 

The incident was confirmed by Athi River Sub-county police commander Samuel Mukuusi who addressed the press at his office on Monday. 

 He said the police have launched investigations into the incident and the suspects are held at Mlolongo police station.

“We have had several cases of vehicles’ breakages at Gateway Mall. Police arrested the three suspects and we are doing investigations to find out if they are part of the syndicate,” said Mukuusi.

He said police officers, with the help of security officers, at the mall were able to ambush the suspects who had been captured on a CCTV camera breaking into vehicles.

He disclosed that there were gunshots but no casualties were reported. Several handbags among other things are were recovered by police. 

“The suspects include two men and a woman. This is an issue that has been happening for a long time along Mombasa road. We are determined to break the syndicate,” said Mukuusi.

“We want to investigate where the suspects live. We are doing our best as police service to ensure that we manage crimes in the entire Athi River sub-county,” he added.

He said Mlolongo police station detectives will present the suspects in court soon. 

He said they will make an application to be granted orders by the court to detain the suspects for more days for ample time to conclude investigations.  Mukuusi said police would investigate the suspects’ residences.
