Medics in Kisumu are set for a fresh strike only a day after nurses signed a new return-to-work formula with the county leadership, ending their three-week strike.
The nurses through their Kenya National Union of Nurses (Knun) leadership on Thursday ended the strike after consultations with the county government led by Governor Anyang' Nyong'o.
However, a new one would be issued by the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) hours later.
KMPDU through its Kisumu Branch Secretary Lameck Omweri on Friday said that they were not part of the Thursday agreement, issuing a fresh strike notice.
He said that doctors are demanding payment of delayed salaries and the county's failure to implement an initial Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
“The CBA implementation has grounded to a halt. We advise KMPDU members to keep off work and continue with salary parades. We wait to see the implementation of all promotions by end of September,” he said.
This was despite claims that Dr Steve Onyango had signed on behalf of KMPDU.
The doctors are also protesting their withheld salaries for July and August.
Consequently, operations remained halted within the county, including at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The same was the case in all the county's referral hospitals whose wards remained closed, forcing patients to seek medical attention else were.
