Nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura through a tweet on Wednesday announced a move to petition for the renaming of Murang'a University to Kenneth Matiba University.
The Nominated Senator said renaming the institution to Kenneth Matiba University will be the best way to honour Matiba.
In his petition, he claimed that under the Heroes Act 2014, the state is obliged to confer recognition to the late statesman for his cordial contributions to the political and economic growth of this country.
He further argued that other patriotic Kenyans like Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel Arap Moi, Masinde Muliro, Dedan Kimathi and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga have been accorded such recognition.
"I have tabled a motion in the house of Senate calling for the recognition of our departed hero and doyen of multi-party democracy Kenneth Matiba, by naming Murang'a University of Technology after him.
"We need to honour true heroes and not the latter-day pretenders and masqueraders," argues Mwaura.
Kenyans on Twitter, however, disagreed with him and termed his move as lack of ideas and vision.
Some suggested the best way to honour Matiba would be to copy the good deeds he stood for and trickle it down to the common mwananchi.
Others felt Kenya has more serious problems to deal with and that Matiba was not the only hero to be honoured.
Kenneth Matiba was a Kenyan politician and a democracy activist during the Moi era. He was also the founder of The People newspaper that began in the 1990s. He died last year after battling a long illness at the Karen Hospital.
